towards the wood by axel hutte is made up of lush, dreamlike color images. this mysterious volume of photographs came to be accidentally. gazing through the lens of his plate-back camera one day, hutte discovered the upright reflection of a lone person within the dark green surface of water. the usage of a plate-back camera results in upside down images but in this case, the coincidental addition of a man or woman in a setting of nature was turned upside down again. excited and fascinated by the results hutte dedicated an entire series to these reverse reflection images. towards the wood feels strangely surreal, seductive and aloof from outside intrusion. these vividly animated images mesmerize and firmly hold the viewer's gaze and interest.
