since 2004, los angeles-based conceptual photographer james welling has produced dramatic floral photograms. flowers, an exhibition catalogue published on the occasion of exhibitions at the david zwirner and maureen paley galleries, showcases large scale compositions in a vast range of saturated color. to produce these works, the artist first placed blossoms of common southern california plants on sheets of 8 x 10 film and exposed them to light. irregularly-shaped color filters were then used to project the negatives onto special photo paper resulting in spectral, silhouetted images of beauty.
