flowers by tony mendoza features compelling floral images presented in an oversized format, in a first edition limited to 2,000 copies. during the summer of 2004, mendoza began to photograph his wife carmen's plot at the community garden near their columbus, ohio home. the resulting images focus on flowers in their various states of growth in a natural uncomplicated setting. the project continued through various seasons in columbus and then san francisco. the bay city afforded mendoza the opportunity to use a grey-tinged sky as a backdrop to the flowers. tony mendoza's photographs are housed in the collections of major museums including the metropolitan museum of art, the museum of modern art, new york, the la county museum of art and the san francisco museum of modern art.
